1. Who we are and what this covers
Gunning Industries Corp, doing business as Taught ("Taught," "we," "us"), operates taught.life (the "Site") and the Taught mobile app (the "App"). This Privacy Policy covers personal information we process when you visit the Site, join our early-access list, contact us as a robotics company, use the App as a Teacher, or appear in a Teacher's recording. It is part of our Terms of Service. Our separate Biometric Data Notice gives more detail on facial, hand and voice characteristics in recordings.
The Service is available only to adults 18 and older in the United States.
2. The short version
- You own your recordings. We license accepted recordings to robotics and AI companies to train and test their systems, and we may use them to develop our own AI models. Teachers earn royalties when their recordings, or Taught models trained on them, are licensed or sold — and you control which of your recordings are available for future licensing and training.
- We capture device data only while you're actively recording a Lesson. Nothing is captured in the background.
- Customers never learn who you are. We don't give them your name, email or contact details, and our contracts prohibit them from trying to identify anyone.
- We don't sell the contact details you give us on the Site or in the App, and we don't use your information for third-party advertising.
- You can access, correct, download and delete your information, and remove recordings from future licensing. Licenses already granted before a removal or deletion stay in place.
3. Information we collect
3.1 When you visit the Site
- Device and usage information: pages viewed, links clicked, referring page, approximate location derived from IP address, browser and device type, collected through Google Analytics and our hosting provider's logs (see Section 8). We don't load Google Analytics for browsers that send a Global Privacy Control signal.
- Early-access requests: your first name, email address and, if you choose, your phone number, and — if you choose — your home type, work setting and interests.
- Robotics inquiries: your work email, company, the task or behavior you need data for, the scale you're considering, and any example-concept details you attach.
3.2 When you use the App as a Teacher
- Account information: email address; first name, and optionally last name and city; your state or territory; your confirmation that you are 18 or older; your time zone; an optional profile photo (kept private); your referral code; and records of the terms and consents you accepted, with dates and versions.
- Matching preferences: information you choose to share so we can recommend Lessons, such as your home setting, appliances, equipment, vehicles, hobbies, work setting and skills.
- Recordings and related data ("Recordings"): video and audio you record for a Lesson; voice notes, text notes, tags and trims you add; device motion and orientation data (accelerometer, gyroscope and attitude) recorded alongside the video; recording timestamps; device model, operating system and camera settings; and technical provenance information that helps confirm a recording was made in the App. For Lessons that require LiDAR depth on a supported device, we also record depth maps showing distances from the camera and a separate wide-camera video alongside the primary video. The Lesson explains these additional recordings and their purpose before you record. Recordings may show your hands, body, voice and surroundings, and may contain characteristics described in our Biometric Data Notice.
- Location: only for Lessons that require it, and only if you grant permission — approximate or precise location, as the Lesson explains, captured during that recording.
- Rewards, redemptions and tax information: your Gold activity, redemptions and the email address gift cards are sent to. If tax reporting requires it, taxpayer information (such as a W-9 and taxpayer identification number) is collected and held by a secure tax-information provider; we keep only a reference to it.
- Referrals: the code you entered and whether a referral qualified.
- Support: messages you send us and our replies.
- App usage and diagnostics: how you use App features, crash reports and performance data, and app version and device information.
- Security and fraud-prevention signals: account age, sign-in activity, IP address, device characteristics, recording-provenance consistency, duplicate-content checks and referral patterns.
3.3 When you appear in someone else's recording
If a Teacher records you as a participant, we collect your image and voice as they appear in the Recording and, through the App's participant consent process, your confirmation that you are 18 or older, your consent, the time and version of the consent, and optionally your first name.
3.4 From other sources
We receive information from service providers acting for us (for example, delivery status from our email provider and order status from our gift-card partner), and from app stores.
4. How we use information
We use personal information to:
- provide the Site, the App and the Service — including sign-in, Lesson recommendations, reservations, recording, uploads, review and your Library;
- license accepted Recordings to customers as described in Section 6 and our Terms;
- develop, train, evaluate and improve Taught's own AI models, including world models, using eligible accepted Recordings as described in Section 6;
- calculate and deliver Gold, royalties, bonuses, referral rewards and gift cards, and meet tax obligations;
- communicate with you — service messages, review results, account notices and, if you haven't opted out, news about Taught — and respond to early-access requests and robotics inquiries;
- keep the Service safe and fair — preventing fraud, abuse, multiple accounts and manipulated recordings, and scanning uploads for child sexual abuse material, which we report to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children as the law requires;
- understand and improve the Site and App, including through aggregate analytics;
- comply with law, enforce our Terms, and establish or defend legal claims; and
- for other purposes we describe to you when we collect the information, or with your consent.
We do not make decisions about you that produce legal or similarly significant effects based solely on automated processing. Review decisions on Recordings are made by people.
5. How we disclose information
We disclose personal information to:
- Service providers that process it on our behalf under contracts that restrict their use of it: Supabase (database and sign-in), Cloudflare (media storage, security and compute), Fly.io (video and LiDAR processing), Vercel (Site hosting), Resend (email delivery), Tango Card (gift cards), our tax-information provider, Google (Analytics, and Workspace, including Google Sheets for early-access and inquiry records), PostHog (App analytics), Sentry (error monitoring), Better Stack (logs), and Stripe (customer billing — it does not receive Teacher information). We may change providers and will keep this list current.
- Customers who license Recordings, as described in Section 6. Customers receive Recordings and related data — never your name, email or contact details.
- Prospective customers, who may receive short, watermarked, reduced-quality evaluation samples of accepted Recordings under evaluation-only terms.
- App stores as needed to distribute the App.
- Authorities and others when we believe in good faith that disclosure is required by law or legal process, or needed to protect the rights, property or safety of Taught, our users, customers or the public — including reports to NCMEC.
- A successor in a merger, acquisition, financing, reorganization or sale of assets, subject to this policy.
- Others, with your consent or at your direction.
6. How recordings are licensed
Licensing Recordings is how Teachers earn royalties, and it happens at your direction: you choose which Lessons to record; each Lesson tells you what it captures and whether it is exclusive; you agree to licensing when you submit; and you can remove any eligible Recording from future licensing — or pause licensing for your whole account — at any time in the App. See also Data Licensing & Ownership.
- What customers receive: accepted Recordings and — depending on the license — their audio, notes and tags, motion data and technical metadata, including records that the required consents were given. Every license of a LiDAR Recording includes its depth maps and the auxiliary wide-camera video and technical records needed to interpret them, within the licensed recording segments. These are covered by your aggregate recording and licensing approval; there is no separate depth licensing approval. The Lesson discloses their collection before you record. By default, customers do not receive precise location. Customers never receive your name, email, phone, profile photo or account details.
- Who customers are: robotics, embodied-AI and AI companies that use Recordings to research, develop, train and evaluate AI models and robotic systems. We may keep a customer's identity confidential from Teachers, but you can see each licensing event of your work in the App.
- What customers must promise: to use Recordings only for those purposes; not to try to identify anyone; not to create biometric templates, digital replicas or voice clones; not to publish or resell Recordings; to protect them with reasonable security and notify us of breaches; not to transfer them to countries of concern, covered persons or foreign-adversary-controlled entities under U.S. law; and to destroy Recordings (other than trained models) when their license ends.
- Taught's own AI models: we may use eligible accepted Recordings to develop, train, evaluate and improve our own AI models, including world models. That internal use is not a licensing or sale event and does not itself earn royalties. When we license or sell a Taught model trained using your Recordings and the payment settles, you earn a royalty share as our Terms describe. We do not use Recordings to identify anyone or to create biometric templates, digital replicas or voice clones.
- What removal and deletion do: removing a Recording from future licensing, pausing licensing or deleting your account stops new licenses and stops the Recording from being used to train new Taught models. It does not undo licenses already granted or models already trained; customers may continue to use Recordings they already licensed, and the models trained on them, under those licenses. We may recall a Recording from customers where the law requires it or to cure a consent problem.
Some state privacy laws may treat licensing Recordings as a "sale" of personal information. Because you direct each license and can stop future licensing at any time, you control it — see Sections 7 and 10.
7. Sale, sharing and targeted advertising
- We do not sell the personal information you give us on the Site (early-access and inquiry details) or your App account and contact information, and we do not share personal information for cross-context behavioral (targeted) advertising.
- We use Google Analytics on the Site to understand how it is used. We have turned off Google's advertising features and Google signals for our account, and we don't load Google Analytics at all for a browser that sends a Global Privacy Control (GPC) signal. We treat GPC as a valid request to opt out of any sale or sharing for that browser.
- To stop future licensing of your Recordings, use Your Data → License new content or remove individual Recordings in the App, or email privacy@taught.life.
8. Cookies and similar technologies
The Site uses a small number of cookies and similar technologies: those needed to run and secure the Site, and Google Analytics cookies (such as _ga) that help us count visits and understand which pages are useful. You can block or delete cookies in your browser, and turning on Global Privacy Control prevents Google Analytics from loading. The Site does not respond to "Do Not Track" signals, which have no common standard, but it does honor GPC. The App does not use third-party advertising or cross-app tracking technologies.
9. How long we keep information
| Information | How long we keep it |
|---|---|
| Early-access and inquiry details | Until you ask us to delete them, or 24 months after our last contact with you, whichever is sooner |
| Account information and matching preferences | While your account is open; deleted or anonymized after deletion, except as below |
| Accepted Recordings | While they remain in your Library or available for licensing, and for as long as needed to honor licenses already granted and resolve disputes |
| Recordings that are never accepted | Deleted 30 days after the review is final (we keep a record that the submission existed and its review outcome) |
| Consent records (terms, biometric and participant consents) | Permanently, to prove consent was given |
| Gold, redemption and tax records | 7 years, then anonymized, to meet tax and accounting obligations |
| Support messages and App analytics | 2 years |
| Security and fraud records | As long as reasonably needed to protect the Service, generally no longer than 3 years |
| Website analytics | The retention period configured in our Google Analytics account |
We may keep information longer where the law requires it or to establish, exercise or defend legal claims. When we no longer need information, we delete or de-identify it.
10. Your choices and rights
Everyone who uses Taught can:
- access and download their information, and correct it (many details can be edited in the App);
- delete their account in the App (see our Terms for what happens to licensed Recordings and Gold);
- remove Recordings from future licensing or pause licensing for their account in the App;
- opt out of marketing email using the unsubscribe link;
- withdraw consent where we rely on it (withdrawal doesn't affect processing already done or licenses already granted); and
- appeal a decision we make about a privacy request.
Depending on the state you live in — including California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Oregon, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas, Utah and Virginia — you may also have the right to: confirm whether we process your personal information and obtain a copy in a portable format; correct inaccuracies; delete personal information we collected from or about you; opt out of the sale of personal information, targeted advertising and certain profiling; limit or withdraw consent to the processing of sensitive personal information; obtain a list of the categories of third parties (and, in Oregon and Minnesota, the specific third parties) to which we have disclosed your personal information; and question the result of certain profiling decisions. We will not discriminate against you for exercising any of these rights.
How to make a request. Use the controls in the App, or email privacy@taught.life from the email address associated with your account or request. We will confirm receipt within 10 business days and respond within 45 days (we may extend this once by 45 days where reasonably necessary, and will tell you why). We verify requests by confirming control of the email address on the account, and may ask for more information where needed to protect your data. An authorized agent may make a request on your behalf with your signed permission; we may ask you to verify your identity directly.
Appeals. If we decline your request, you may appeal by replying to our response or emailing privacy@taught.life with the subject line "Privacy appeal." We will respond within 45 days, or as your state's law requires. If you are not satisfied with the outcome, you may contact your state Attorney General.
If you appear in a Recording but are not a Teacher, you can ask us to redact it, remove it from future licensing, or delete your participant record by emailing privacy@taught.life. We will act on a verified request within 7 days of verification where we can.
11. Sensitive personal information
Some information we process may be "sensitive" under state law:
- Biometric information. Recordings may contain facial, hand or voice characteristics. We do not create biometric templates or identify people from Recordings, and we obtain your written consent before you record. See the Biometric Data Notice.
- Precise geolocation, only for Lessons that require it, with your separate permission.
- Taxpayer identification numbers, held by our tax-information provider only when tax reporting requires them.
We process sensitive personal information only with your consent where the law requires it, only for the purposes described in this policy — providing the Service you asked for, licensing Recordings as you direct, developing Taught's own AI models as described in Section 6, security, fraud prevention and legal compliance — and not to infer characteristics about you. You can withdraw consent or limit this use by removing Recordings from licensing, pausing licensing, revoking the App's location permission, or emailing privacy@taught.life.
We do not intend to collect consumer health data, and our Community Guidelines prohibit recording health information. If health information is captured incidentally, we treat it as prohibited content and withhold it from licensing.
12. Notice of financial incentive
This section is our Notice of Financial Incentive under California law and similar laws.
What the program is. When you record Lessons, we offer Gold rewards — a base award for each accepted Recording, royalties when an eligible accepted Recording is licensed and the customer has paid, guaranteed awards for Exclusive Lessons, and referral boosts and bonuses — as described in our Terms. These rewards relate to our collection and licensing of the personal information in your Recordings.
Categories of personal information involved. Recordings (video, including auxiliary wide-camera video where the Lesson requires it; audio; motion data; LiDAR depth maps where required; notes; and metadata) and the account and preference information needed to operate the program.
How you opt in and withdraw. You opt in by accepting our Terms and the in-App consents and choosing to record a Lesson. You may withdraw at any time — without penalty — by not recording further Lessons, removing Recordings from future licensing, pausing licensing, or deleting your account. Gold is earned only for accepted Recordings, and royalties only while Recordings are licensable.
Our good-faith estimate of the value of your data, and how we calculate it. The value of a Recording to Taught is what customers pay to license it, less our costs. We calculate the value we share with you as (a) the base award shown on each Lesson (currently about 50–150 Gold, which corresponds to about $0.05–$0.15 of redemption value, and more for Exclusive Lessons), plus (b) your royalty share — 40% to 70% by Teacher Level — of the licensing revenue we attribute to that Recording each time it is licensed, and of the revenue we attribute to it each time a Taught model trained using it is licensed or sold. Because licensing revenue varies by Recording and many Recordings may never be licensed, we estimate that the value of a Recording to us is reasonably related to the rewards we share for it.
13. California residents
In the preceding 12 months we have collected the following categories of personal information, from the sources and for the purposes described in Sections 3 and 4, and disclosed them for business purposes to the recipients in Section 5:
| Category (Cal. Civ. Code §1798.140) | Examples | Disclosed to |
|---|---|---|
| Identifiers | name, email, phone (optional), IP address, account ID | service providers |
| Customer records | taxpayer information (held by our tax provider) | service providers |
| Commercial information | Gold, redemptions, referrals | service providers |
| Internet or electronic network activity | Site and App usage, diagnostics | service providers |
| Geolocation | approximate location from IP; precise location only for Lessons that require it | service providers; customers (not precise location, by default) |
| Audio, electronic and visual information | Recordings, including primary and auxiliary wide-camera video; voice notes | service providers; customers |
| Sensor data | Device motion and orientation, and LiDAR depth maps, during recording | service providers; customers |
| Professional information | work email and company (robotics inquiries) | service providers |
| Inferences | Lesson matching based on preferences you share | service providers |
| Sensitive personal information | biometric characteristics that may appear in Recordings; precise geolocation; account sign-in credentials; taxpayer ID | as above |
Sale and sharing. We have not sold personal information or shared it for cross-context behavioral advertising, except that licensing Recordings to customers — which occurs at the Teacher's direction — may be considered a "sale" of audio, visual and sensor information and of the sensitive information within Recordings. We do not knowingly sell or share the personal information of consumers under 16.
Shine the Light. We do not share personal information with third parties for their own direct marketing purposes.
Other rights. California residents also have the rights described in Section 10, and may use an authorized agent.
14. Security
We protect personal information with administrative, technical and physical safeguards appropriate to its sensitivity, including encryption in transit and at rest, private storage with short-lived access links, access controls and row-level security, audit logging of administrative actions, and regular backups. Recordings are stored in private storage that is never publicly accessible. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure. If we learn of a security breach affecting your personal information, we will notify you and the authorities as the law requires.
15. Children
The Service is only for adults 18 and older and is not directed to children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. Recordings must never include minors. If we learn that we have collected information from someone under 18, or that a Recording includes a minor, we will delete it and exclude it from licensing. Contact privacy@taught.life if you believe this has happened.
16. Where information is processed
We and our service providers store and process personal information in the United States. We may license Recordings to customers located outside the United States under contracts that protect the data and prohibit onward transfer to countries of concern, covered persons or foreign-adversary-controlled entities under U.S. law. We do not license Recordings to those countries or persons.
17. Nevada residents
We do not sell covered information, as defined in Nevada law, collected through the Site. Nevada residents may submit a request to opt out of any future sale to privacy@taught.life.
18. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy. If we make material changes, we will notify you by email or in the App at least 30 days before they take effect, and we will ask for your consent where required. We will not use personal information in a materially different way from what we disclosed when we collected it without your consent. The "Last updated" date shows when this policy last changed.
