You own your footage
The original recordings you make in Taught are yours. When you submit one, you give Taught a license to review it and — once it's accepted — to license it to robotics and AI companies and to use it to develop Taught's own AI models. You never give up ownership, and customers never own your recordings; they get a license to use them.
Who licenses recordings, and why
Our customers are robotics, embodied-AI and AI companies. They use recordings of real people doing real tasks to teach robots physical skills — how to grip, fold, place, clean — and to test how well their systems work. Most Lessons are non-exclusive, so the same useful recording can be licensed to more than one company, and each license can earn you a royalty.
What customers get — and don't
Customers receive accepted recordings and, depending on the license, their audio, your notes and tags, motion data and technical metadata. For Lessons recorded with LiDAR, every license includes the depth maps and the extra wide-camera video needed to use them — covered by the same licensing approval, with no separate checkbox. They never receive your name, email, phone number, profile photo or account details, and by default they don't receive precise location.
What customers may not do
Every customer signs an agreement that limits use to developing and testing AI and robotic systems, and prohibits them from:
- trying to identify, locate or contact anyone in a recording;
- creating face, hand or voice templates or any other biometric identifier;
- making a digital replica, deepfake or voice clone of anyone;
- publishing, reselling or redistributing recordings; and
- transferring recordings to countries or entities barred by U.S. law.
They must keep recordings secure, tell us about security incidents, and delete recordings when their license ends. Models they have already trained can keep what they learned — that can't be undone.
Taught's own AI models
Taught may use accepted recordings that are available for licensing to train and improve its own AI models, including world models. Training our own models doesn't earn royalties by itself. When Taught licenses or sells one of those models and the payment settles, you earn Royalty Gold — your usual royalty share of the revenue we attribute to your recordings, based on how much of your accepted recording time the model was trained on. Exclusive Lessons aren't used for this during their exclusive term.
Exclusive Lessons
Some Lessons are funded by one company, or a small named group, that wants exclusive rights. These are always labeled before you record. An Exclusive Lesson pays a guaranteed one-time award instead of royalties, and the recording isn't licensed to anyone else during the exclusive term — which may be permanent, or may end on a stated date, after which it can be licensed normally and earn royalties.
Your controls
- See every licensing event of your work in the App. A customer's name may be kept confidential.
- Remove a recording from future licensing at any time (except while it's under review or during an exclusive term), and re-enable it later. This also stops it being used to train new Taught models.
- Pause licensing of new content for your whole account from Your Data; paused content isn't used to train new Taught models either.
- Delete your account. Recordings that were never licensed are permanently deleted.
Licenses already granted can't be revoked. Removing, pausing or deleting stops new licenses and new training, but companies that already licensed a recording keep their license, models already trained keep what they learned, and royalties you already earned stay yours.
How you're paid
Accepted recordings earn a base award in Gold. When an eligible recording is licensed and the customer's payment has settled, you earn Royalty Gold — a share of the licensing revenue, from 40% to 70% depending on your Teacher Level. The same shares apply when Taught licenses or sells a model trained on your recordings. Royalties depend on licensing activity and aren't guaranteed. Gold never expires and is redeemed for gift cards. See How earning works and our Terms.
