1. Why this notice exists
Taught licenses first-person recordings of everyday tasks to robotics and AI companies. Those recordings are video and audio of real people, so they can contain physical and vocal characteristics — the shape and movement of your hands, and, if they appear, your face and voice. Some laws treat identifiers or information derived from such characteristics as "biometric." This notice applies to every Teacher and every participant who appears in a recording, wherever they live. It is part of our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy.
2. What may be in a recording
- Hands and body: Lessons are recorded from your point of view, so your hands and arms are usually visible, and their shape and motion are what robots learn from.
- Face: Lessons are designed so your face is not normally in view. A face may appear briefly — for example, in a reflection — or if a participant appears with their consent.
- Voice: your voice may be captured if you narrate, add voice notes, or speak while recording.
- Motion data: device motion and orientation recorded alongside the video. This is not biometric data by itself.
- LiDAR depth: for Lessons that require it, depth maps showing distances from the camera, and a separate wide-camera video. Depth maps describe the shape of the scene, which can include your hands and body. We do not use them to create templates or to identify anyone.
3. What we do — and don't do
We do not extract, create, store or use face geometry, hand geometry, voiceprints, or any other biometric template or identifier from recordings. We do not use recordings to identify or verify anyone, and we do not sell biometric identifiers or biometric information.
We do store, review and license recordings — the video, audio and related data — and use them to develop Taught's own AI models, for the purposes below. Apart from training and evaluating AI models as described in Section 4, our automated processing of recordings is limited to technical checks such as length, the presence of speech where a Lesson requires narration, file integrity, duplicate detection, and scanning for child sexual abuse material. None of these checks identify anyone.
4. Purposes
We collect and use recordings, including any characteristics they contain, to:
- operate the Service — upload, store, review and accept your recordings;
- license accepted recordings to robotics, embodied-AI and AI companies so they can research, develop, train and evaluate AI models and robotic systems, which is how Teachers earn royalties;
- develop, train and evaluate Taught's own AI models, including world models — never to identify anyone or to create biometric templates, digital replicas or voice clones; and
- keep the Service safe and lawful.
5. Consent
Before you record your first Lesson, the App asks for your written consent — given electronically — to collect recordings that may contain these characteristics, to disclose them by licensing recordings to customers, and to use them to develop Taught's own AI models, as described here. We keep a record of your consent, including its version and time. People who appear in a Teacher's recording give their own consent through the App's participant process before they are recorded. We do not collect a recording from anyone who has not consented.
6. Disclosure to customers, and what customers must not do
We disclose recordings to customers only under written agreements. Customers may use recordings only to develop and evaluate AI models and robotic systems, and must not:
- extract or create biometric identifiers or templates (such as face geometry, voiceprints or hand-geometry templates used to identify a person) from recordings;
- attempt to identify, re-identify, locate or contact any person in a recording;
- create a digital replica, synthetic likeness or voice clone of any person;
- publish, sell, resell or redistribute recordings, or use them for surveillance or to build identification databases; or
- transfer recordings to countries of concern, covered persons or foreign-adversary-controlled entities under U.S. law.
Customers must protect recordings with reasonable security, notify us of any security incident, and destroy recordings when their license ends. We do not disclose recordings to anyone else except our service providers (who process them only for us), or where required by law or valid legal process.
7. Retention schedule and destruction guidelines
- Recordings that are never accepted are permanently destroyed 30 days after the review decision is final.
- Accepted recordings are kept while they remain in your Library or available for licensing, because licensing them is the purpose for which they were collected.
- When you delete your account, or ask us to delete a recording that has never been licensed, we destroy it within 30 days of the request.
- Recordings that have been licensed remain with the customers who licensed them under those licenses, which you consented to. We keep our copy only as long as needed to honor those licenses and resolve disputes, and then destroy it.
- In all cases, any recording containing these characteristics will be destroyed when the purpose for collecting it has been satisfied, or within 3 years of your last interaction with Taught, whichever comes first — except where a longer period is required by law or by a valid warrant or subpoena.
Destruction means permanent deletion from our storage and our service providers' active systems; backups are overwritten on their normal cycle.
8. Security
We store recordings using a reasonable standard of care, at least as protective as the way we store other confidential and sensitive information: encryption in transit and at rest, private storage that is never publicly accessible, short-lived access links, access controls and audit logging. If we become aware of a security breach affecting recordings, we will respond promptly and notify affected people and authorities as the law requires.
9. Your choices
- Withdraw consent at any time by emailing privacy@taught.life or deleting your account. You won't be able to record new Lessons without consent. Withdrawing consent stops future collection, licensing and training of new Taught models, but does not undo licenses already granted or models already trained.
- Remove recordings from future licensing, or pause licensing for your account, in the App.
- Request access to or deletion of your recordings as described in the Privacy Policy.
- If you appear in a recording but are not a Teacher, email privacy@taught.life to have it redacted or withdrawn from future licensing.
10. State-specific notes
- Illinois: this notice is our publicly available written policy establishing a retention schedule and guidelines for permanently destroying biometric identifiers and biometric information under 740 ILCS 14/15(a).
- Texas and Washington: we do not sell, lease or disclose biometric identifiers, and recordings are disclosed only to complete the service you consented to — licensing your recordings — under contracts that prohibit further disclosure and identification.
- Colorado and other states: you may access information about the biometric data we hold and request deletion as described above. If a security incident affects recordings, we follow our incident-response procedures and notify you as the law requires.
